Geek Heresy: Rescuing Social Change from the Cult of Technology

Over the last four decades, the United States experienced a golden age of digital innovation, yet during the same time span the rate of poverty didn’t decrease, and inequality skyrocketed. This fact casts considerable doubt on Silicon Valley's triumphalist claims about technology leading to positive social change. Based on a recent book with the same title, this talk presents the Law of Amplification -- a coarse-grained theory about technology's impact on society. Its corollaries explain a wide range of tech-and-society phenomena and suggest that especially in a world of advanced machines, human wisdom matters all the more.
