Freedom ride

News Hits would like to put in a plug for an upcoming event sponsored by the good folks over at the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. There will be an all-day affair, beginning with a special memorial ceremony honoring slain civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo and “other local martyrs of the civil rights movement.” That starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary church at the corner of Pembroke and Mansfield streets in Detroit. After that, there will be a chartered bus trip to visit the Fifth Annual Inter-faith Gospel Festival being held at the John Freeman Walls Historic Site and Underground Railroad Museum in Puce, Ontario, about 25 minutes north of Windsor.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the Detroit 300 youth-education programs, which, according to organizers, teach the value of Detroit’s civil-rights heritage, from the role of the underground railroad to the modern movement.

Tickets for the tour are $25 for students and seniors, and $35 for adults. For more information phone the MCHR at 313-869-8835 or visit its Web site at
