TOM House: The Work and Life of Tom of Finland

Mondays-Sundays, 6-9 p.m. Continues through May 19

In collaboration with Tom of Finland Foundation, Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead will realize TOM House: The Work and Life of Tom of Finland. The exhibition will feature work by Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen, Finnish, 1920-1991) and incorporate artists who supported and admired his work over the years, including Richard Hawkins, Robert Mapplethorpe, Raymond Pettibon, Jim Shaw, and John Waters. The presentation will also include photographs, reference materials, and ephemera. The exhibition will remain on view through May 19, 2018. $5 suggested donation

The DIA debuts its latest exhibition, Making Home: Contemporary Works, just in time for the holidays. The collection explores interpretations of domestic space, permanency, and proposes questions of what it means to what it means to feel at “home.” Nearly 50 works in a variety of mediums ranging from prints, drawings, photographs, and contemporary art make up Making Home. Celebrated Detroit-based artists Bill Rauhauser and Charles McGee explore urbanization while photographer Carrie Mae Williams dives into gender and domesticity with The Kitchen Table Series. free

Red Bull House of Art Resident Artist Exhibition

Mondays-Sundays, 7 p.m. Continues through May 19

The Red Bull House of Art’s first Resident Artist Exhibition of 2018 will feature three Dominican-American women, all of whom dare to explore identity through varying perspectives. The work displayed is the result of the three-month live-in residency as provided by RBHOA. Expect to view the meditative work of artist Joiri Minaya and her exploration of gender roles, migration, and identity constructions. Lucia Hierro will have conceptual works on deck, and Gina Goico will reveal how she navigates the spaces in which she exists. Exhibition remains on display until Saturday, May 19. Free

You know what they say — children are the future. This idiom is best illustrated by the 81st Detroit Public Schools Community District Student Exhibition. Despite massive cuts to Detroit’s public school art programs, artistic students persevere with the support of the exemplary teachers working tirelessly to encourage self-expression. Explorations of imagination and visions of the future, as shown by students grades K-12, the exhibit will feature hundreds of works in a wide range of mediums including paint, print, drawings, photography, ceramics, video, jewelry, and more. Opening Reception for Watercolor, Expression, Application: Rocco Pisto Paintings. Free to the Public. Complimentary wine & hors d'oeuvres provided. The remarkable collection of work presented in this show will range from abstract, mixed media watercolor paintings to somewhat impressionistic landscapes. The artist experiments with the flow of his brush strokes, following the direction of the drying process as the piece evolves into multiple layers of imagination and design.
