Devotional

Cordelia, photographer. Christina, hydrogeoligist. Two years of acquiescence, work, gaining familiarity. Then one cross-country road trip, three major arguments, and two weeks of silence later there's a long fervent night of love-making. A real Venus-soaked session of romping. The following week two platinum bands. House. China. Years. Dinner parties. One case of cancer in Cordelia's breast. Meditation, medication, long weeks of chemo. Weakness, tears, vomit, commitment. The present sinks into the past. Dead friends are seen bedside. One set of last words. "Your love devoted me here." Followed by a week of flowers, phone calls, and disapproving relatives.
