Detroiters band together to raise cash for owners of Yum Yum Donuts in Melvindale after bakery was destroyed in fire

Seems that whenever a fellow Metro Detroiter is down, there are plenty of brethren to help pick up the pieces. And who better to galvanize the people than a local bartender. Such is the case for the Greenwald family, owners of the Yum Yum Donuts shop in Melvindale, whose store was destroyed in a fire Oct. 4. Once word got around that the bakery (and the family's main source of income) was no more, a bunch of supporters have banded together to help the Greenwalds out as they figure out their next steps.

A fundraiser will be held 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., Oct. 20 at the Corktown Tavern at 1716 Michigan Ave., in which proceeds will go directly to the Greenwalds to help them get back on their feet. According a Facebook page set up for the event, the Greenwalds owned and been in the doughnut shop business since '82 and had the Melvindale location for the past eight years. The spot served as a meeting place for regulars and the family donated their baked goods to a number of local events. Now, the property is of no use and the family still has three kids at home to support.

Says Andrea Bonaventura, a bartender at the New Dodge Lounge in Hamtramck who's helping organize the event, the benefit is a testament to Detroiters having each others' backs in times of need.

A $5 suggested donation gets you in the door and raffle tickets will be sold sold, for what we hear are some pretty sweet prizes, all donated by local businesses. Prizes include art, tickets to shows, organic skin care products, hotel stays and more. We hear the Greenwald's are good people, and of course, they've served the community's donut needs for decades, so why not give a helping hand.
