Cultivated Silence: Historical Trauma, Memory and Famine in Soviet Ukraine

The Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus is hosting a new speakers series entitled Community Conversations featuring experts on genocide, political maneuvering and world history. Matthew Pauly, Ph.D. will speak about the Soviet Ukraine in the late 1920s. During that time, Soviet leaders began their struggle for final control of the Ukrainian countryside by confiscating the peasantry’s grain. This action contributed to the outbreak of a devastating famine that killed millions. Pauly is an Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University. RSVPs are requested by Feb. 22 to 248-553-2400 x 112 or [email protected]
