City Slang: DSO rolls over Beethoven

Oct 16, 2011 at 9:29 am

On October 27-29, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Fifth. Louis Langrée will be the conductor. Price will start at $15. More information can be found here.

According to the DSO website, “No other musical statement can match its raw power and bracing energy. Louis Langrée leads the Detroit Symphony in Beethoven's Fifth Symphony - its infamous four opening notes often described as "fate knocking at the door." This concert also features dazzling showpieces for violin and orchestra by Ravel and Saint-Saens, with Acting Concertmaster Kimberly Kennedy, and the DSO premiere of a work by Chinese composer Qigang Chen, who served as music director of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Beethoven’ Fifth is arguably the most recorded symphony ever. Amazon alone lists over 1500 albums.”

The DSO is a local treasure that really needs to be supported. It’s had its financial difficulties of late, and it would be a tragedy if Detroit lost its orchestra, so get out and watch some amazing music. Whether you’re a metal-head, a crusty old punk, a hip-hop kid or an oh-so-cool hipster, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is for you. Why wouldn’t you want to enjoy it. Plus, Beethoven’s Fifth is a nice, accessible route into the world. Open your mind and dig in.
