Consistently ranked as one of the greatest films of all time, Casablanca was something of an unexpected hit when it was first released in 1942. Though it was an A-list Hollywood film, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and was mildly successful in theaters, the film gained its reputation slowly, during the years that followed its initial release. It won Academy Awards for best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay. The flick is also famously debated in the ’80s romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally where Meg Ryan states, “Women are very practical, even Ingrid Bergman, which is why she gets on the plane at the end of the movie.”
