The Scarab Club’s chamber music series roves a little bit more broadly than the usual string quintets the genre suggests, and this 17th season has its surprises. That includes this installment, which features the Michigan Opera Theatre’s principal clarinetist, Brian Bowman, leading a performance of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, a moody piece of music that’s wonderfully evocative of the blustery days of autumn. Another offbeat treat is the Scarab Club debut of the Folias Flute and Guitar Duo from Grand Rapids. With as light and airy a sound as you’d expect, flutist Carmen Maret and guitarist Andrew Bergeron draw on all sorts of influences, from South American folk music to Argentine tango, as well as jazz and other improvisational music. After the performance in the main gallery, guests will have a chance to meet the artists over punch and hors d'oeuvres in the lounge.
