Restaurant Details

Bookies is a neighborhood bar attracting a variety of clientelle. After work you'll find automotive workers and managers alike, Insurance profs., Journeymen, cops, teachers etc. The crowd is balanced after work (m/f) and is cordial and "Chreers" like, they all know one another and are a friendly bunch of folks.

Later in the evening the music increases in vol. and the juke box is replacd by D.J. Mon.=blues, Tues.=oldies night, various r&b all other nights.

Bid whiss, Pool, and Dart tournaments are regular features (weekly).

What makes this spot unique are the people, in particular an especially vibrant quick witted bar tender/manager "Donna Lynn", who relocated from the now defunct "de lai's". Most of her clientelle followed her to this spot.

Decor is early 80's dark blue basement. In other words do not turn up the lights too high, lest the truth be revealed. But this is in capital letters B A R (period). Some but not a whole lot of dancing. The drinks are free and liberal pour made right.

Almost forgot the kitchen. Traditional non-immigrant menu of collard greens, corn bread, mac&cheese, fried/baked fish, shrimp, featuring salmon croquettes on fridays. Food is tops in this place, evidenced by heavy carryout business.
