The HBO series Boardwalk Empire, which takes place in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, has just released a series of vintage jazz recording remixes titled Sounds of the Onyx.  The artists who participated on this six-track album include top hip-hop and urban music producers, including Pete Rock, Om’ Mas Keith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Today’s artists reconstructed original recordings by musical legends such as Ethel Waters and Clarence Williams, Lloyd Scott & His Orchestra, Jim Jackson and Charlie Johnson’s Paradise Ten Orchestra — carrying their early jazz creations into the highly produced, “cut and paste” world of the 21st century. The remix project is available via Soundcloud, and ABCKO Records has also just released Boardwalk Empire Volume 2: Music from the HBO Original Series. The album’s title refers to Season No. 4’s showcase, the Onyx Club — a nightclub run by Chalky White, played by Michael K. Williams, an actor best known for his portrayal of Omar Little in the acclaimed series The Wire
