Best Statewide School District to Not Expand

The Education Achievement Authority

The state House surprised us last month when it took up a bill to expand the number of schools the state's Education Achievement Authority can oversee from 15 to 50. From the get-go, there's been plenty of criticisms levied against the reform school district, which now operates low-performing schools in Detroit Public Schools. The concerns range from the high turnover of teachers to, most recently, revelations that a majority of students haven't progressed in the statewide MEAP test year-over-year. And yet, already Gov. Rick Snyder and GOP lawmakers are bent on expanding the initiative. We think it's best to pump the brakes on that; if the EAA remains an unproven solution, there's no need to make it any bigger.
