Modern has been a mainstay for local skateboarders for a number of years. With cheap hourly rates, it offers a go-to spot for those looking to drop-in year-round. Our readers seem to have also found the Ride It project as interesting as we did. Local husband-and-wife artists Mitch Cope and Gina Reichert won a $30,000 grant to realize their dream of building a skate park in a string of vacant lots on the edge of a north Detroit neighborhood. Cope described the park to us last year as such: “A lot of older skaters like it because it reminds them of the old pool days back in late ’70s and ’80s, and newer skaters like it because it’s unusual.”
