Most horchata in Mexican restaurants is made from rice, with cinnamon as the main flavoring. (One place even uses pasta water.) It’s good, but doesn’t compare with La Pupusería’s version, which also throws in milk, chocolate, sugar, peanuts, sesame seeds, vanilla, and, most especially, nutty-flavored morro seeds, imported from El Salvador. The milky concoction is both refreshing and reassuring. Salvadorans pining for a taste of home can buy it in packet form, too.
