The 173-year-old market has been at its present location since 1891 — smack in the middle of a bustling 43-acre area that’s home to wholesalers, retailers and the prominent sales sheds. Re-energized by the Eastern Market Corporation, established in 2007, the market has seen significant renovations and improvements. As the corporation’s head Dan Carmody points out, the market is a unique survivor: “It’s the last of a kind of local food district that every city had that was significantly built before 1950.”
