Say what you want about Bonds: He was egocentric, he was a temperamental drunk, he was argumentative in the extreme. But stack him up next to today's talking heads and you see him for what he was: a tough-as-nails son of Detroit with a determination not to be snowed by anybody. As one man said to us once: "There's two people in the world I completely disagree with: Coleman Young and Bill Bonds," before adding wistfully, "but there's no two people in the world I'd rather have a drink with."
