Best Activist

Grace Lee Boggs

In a city with a rich tradition of activism and struggles for liberation, it's no small honor to be recognized as the best in this category. At 99 years old, Boggs has joined struggles for social justice longer than many of us have been alive. In just the last 25 years, she has written two books, founded the multicultural, intergenerational youth program Detroit Summer, inspired the founding of the James and Grace Lee Boggs School in Detroit, and became the subject of a PBS documentary, American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs. Still offering a defiant perspective, although reportedly in frail health, Boggs remains an inspiration.
