We’re always pleased when one of MT’s longtime writers or staffers makes the leap into books. The latest is our longtime jazz writer Charles Latimer, and the book is a collection of the pieces he wrote for us, titled Behind the Swing ($14.95, 260 pp.). Latimer’s subjects range from international legends (Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Horace Silver) to Detroit-born artists (James Carter, Kenny Cox, Regina Carter, Marcus Belgrave), and even local movers and shakers (jazz festival savior Gretchen Carhartt, smooth-jazz ambassador Alexander Zonjic, improvisational music performer-promoter Joel Peterson).
He appears twice this week, at 6-7 p.m. Sept. 2, at Source Booksellers, 4240 Cass Ave., #105, Detroit; 313-832-1155; and at 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 4, at the Jazz Talk Tent at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
