Banners & Cranks is a festival that celebrates the tradition of cantastoria. You’re probably wondering what exactly cantastoria is. Well, cantastoria is a traditional and theatrical form of storytelling where a performer sings a story while pointing to a series of images, painted or otherwise. The four-day festival will see different programs happening at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Trumbullplex, and the Carrie Moss Art Production House, from a history of cantastoria to an evening of cranky stories with the Detroit Pleasure Society Band. Sunday afternoon sees a kid-friendly cranky stories at the DIA, while the evening will be filled with inspirational and confounding tales at CMAP.
