Backslash

Feeling a little lonely and disconnected? Looking to meet new and interesting people? Craving a bit of excitement and danger? Then consider becoming a pen pal to a convicted felon.

At prisonpenpals.com, you can hook up with all manner of law-breaking lonely hearts, who yearn for a connection outside of the walls. Yes, prisoner personals, complete with photos (pre-incarceration) abound here, listing interests such as “cooking, dancing, and taking long walks on the beach.” We kid you not. Here you can search for prisoners, male or female, and immediately obtain their mailing address and release date (most don’t specify the nature of their conviction, but a few fess up and lay all the details of their crime out on the table). Some are seeking not companionship but legal advice, or funding for their appeal cases.

At writeaprisoner.com you can search by state, or who has an upcoming birthday. The site even has a special section for inmate résumés.

If you have a friend behind bars and want to do a little something special, you can register them at inmate-connections.com — with a check, money order, credit card or PayPal. A full Web page for your inmate will cost you $40 — a more modest classified ad is $20.

Perhaps your new connection will lead to a walk down the aisle — check out www.thepamperedprisoner.com/wedding.htm for a list of all the happy couples linked through the site.

Similar sites exist at www.friendsbeyondthewall.com and www.prisonerlife.com. With so many options available, it’s easy to make a new friend, add a bit of companionship to someone who may feel horribly lonely and isolated, or even find your Mr. Right — in five to 10 years, depending on good behavior.
