Talking bull: In conjunction with Elliott Earls: The Bull and Wounded Horse exhibiting at Cranbrook Art Museum through March, Earls gives a lecture about his artwork — painting, sculpture, design, video and performance that bends the boundaries between those media and playfully flexes stereotypes about artists and designers who work in each. As head of Cranbrook’s graphic design department, Earls has developed a cult following of students with his blow-the-top pop designs. He’ll be sure to talk slang you can really feel at this discussion, so show up for the refreshing attitude at 7:30-10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, in the auditorium of the Walter B. Ford Building at The College For Creative Studies, 201 E. Kirby, Detroit.
Building excitement: The results of AIA (American Institute of Architects) Detroit Chapter’s annual design awards are in. A jury of three architects selected 11 winning projects in the metro Detroit area that reflect the institute’s standards of creative vision, innovation, cultural revitalization and social responsibility through reuse of an existing facility. Among the winners are Detroit Public Schools Central Maintenance Hub and Detroit Public Schools Children’s Museum by VanTine Guthrie Studio of Architecture; Ford Rouge Factory Tour Center by HarleyEllis; the new Detroit Science Center by Neumann/Smith & Associates; the Ruicci Residence, located in Farmington Hills, also by VanTine Guthrie Studio of Architecture, and University of Michigan Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies by SmithGroup. The chapter also honored Peter Karmanos with the Charles Blessing Award for his efforts at reviving downtown by relocating Compuware headquarters.
