Art & Soul

When: Tue., Aug. 22 2017
Since June , downtown Ferndale’s restaurant, The Conserva has been doing monthly art exhibits. Combining food and art has been a concept since owner and Chef Matthew Baldridge and his wife, Janna Coumoundouros started their dinner club series called Dinner Club Pop Up back in 2014. They started the pop up series at The Storefront Gallery in Ferndale as a way to test out menu items for the future brick and mortar, The Conserva. The pop up dinners were a way for Chef Matt to have the freedom to create interesting and delicious dishes without being tied down to a specific menu. Adding art into the equation was the idea of his wife Janna. They’re continuing the concept at the restaurant and have a fantastic line up for the next few months.

Coming August 22 is Art & Soul. The photography project collaborates with award winning photographers, pairing each photographer with one foster child to capture the soul of these beautiful children, through photography. The teenage foster children are looking for a forever family and Art & Soul works tirelessly as a supportive partner to help increase the rate of adoption for children in the Michigan foster care and adoption system. Photographers include Joe Vaughn, Janna Coumoundouros, Scott Sprague, Boswell Hardwick, Josh Carroll, Brian Day, William E Dwyer, Father Bob McCabe, Elayne Gross, Marisol Dorances-Silva, Tony Bennett, Marla Michele Must, Nick Hagan, Alex Alexander, Marta Xochilt Perez, Ralph Jones, Heather Saunders, Carrie Hall, and Justin Milhouse. The traveling exhibit will be at The Conserva August 22 - September 17th with an opening reception August 24th 7-9pm. Reservations are not required but recommended if you would like a table for dinner. Full dinner and bar service available.

The next exhibit will be Joshua Carroll of Fixed Position Photography, a unique portrait photographer. He shoots with a large camera that he built himself called an Afghan camera. He has been shooting portraits with it in Eastern Market for 2 summers now and he is doing some truly incredible portraiture. It is photography in it's purest form as he uncovers the lens, exposes the photo paper inside the box, then reaches in the light tight box from the sides and dips the print into the developer and fix, creating a "negative" on the paper. Then he rephotographs the negative to make a positive. This will be his first ever photography exhibit of the work from this camera. He will also bring the camera to the opening reception to take portraits. The exhibit will run from September 18-October 23 with an opening reception on September 21st from 7-9pm.

The Conserva is located at 201 E. 9 Mile, on the ground floor of the Lofts on 9 Mile, across from the library. Permanent business hours are to follow: Tue-Sat 4pm-midnight and Sunday brunch 11am-4pm.

Reservations can be made online at or call 248-291-6133.
