Was the Somme a 'Bloody necessity'? This talk puts the battle in the perspective of 1916 and looks in depth at the political and military events which led to the 141 days of the Somme. Famed U.K. historian Andy Robertshaw was lead historical consultant for Spielberg’s film adaptation of War Horse, which he also starred in. He is a regular consultant and on-screen expert for a host of TV and radio shows, including Time Team, The Trench Detectives and Who Do You Think You Are?
