A day in May

May 24, 2006 at 12:00 am

You've got an extra day to kick back and simply exhale. Maybe you'll indulge in the highly underrated activity of doing nothing, or maybe you'll be spin-dancing at Hart Plaza. Maybe you plan to split Dodge. If you need more help, we suggest:

Thursday, May 25-Monday, May 29, Wyandotte Spring Fling (downtown Wyandotte, visit Wyandotte.net): The charming downriver city has restaurants, galleries, shopping and all the watering holes a soon-to-be hot-spot should. Their Spring Fling is certain joy — old-fashioned street carnival, complete with rides, bellyache-inducing foods and communal fun.

Saturday, May 27, Belle Isle Plant Sale: Good luck finding more beautiful botanical specimens than those in stock at Belle Isle's Ann Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. For a song, gardeners can purchase perennials, annuals, herbs, mini-roses, hostas, houseplants, coleus and tomatoes. Proceeds will benefit the Belle Isle Botanical Society. From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Greenhouses.

Saturday, May 27-Monday, May 29, Civil War Remembrance at Greenfield Village, (20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn; 313-271-1620): Enjoy Greenfield Village's holiday observation with military re-enactments, artillery firing demonstrations, drum and fife corps performances, a period fashion show and other activities including lectures and hands-on activities.

Sunday, May 28, and Monday, May 29, Hometown parades: What's not to love — in a fuddy-duddy sort of way? On Sunday in St. Clair Shores and on Monday in Northville, Madison Heights, Dearborn, Sterling Heights, Royal Oak and Novi, downtowns host all things Americana, such as veterans, floats, clowns, marching bands, cheerleaders ... you know the routine. And it's one way to recognize that Memorial Day is about more than backyard barbecues, drunken uncles and sunburn.

Monday, May 31, Tigers vs. Yankees (Comerica Park, 2100 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-471-2255): Thanks to chutzpah of manager Jim Leyland and team full of young (and old) guns, the Detroit Tigers are hovering around No. 1 in the American League. They're doing better than they have in more than a decade, so it's all the more fun to watch the boys take on the most-hated team in MLB, old George Steinbrenner's Orwellian New York Yankees. The bandwagon's parked right out front and the weather's fair! Jump on.
