Royal Oak gets hit with swastika symbols, police seeking tips

A half-dozen swastikas and "white power" phrases were found spray painted on garage doors, fences, and cars in Royal Oak over the weekend and police are now seeking tips and investigating the situation.

Residents alongside west of Main Street near Meininger Park began calling police Sunday morning after they noticed the vandalism appeared from the night before. The first call came from a resident at about 6 a.m. when they reported a swastika on a garage door.

“Royal Oak rejects racism and bigotry in all its forms,” Royal Oak Mayor Michael Fournier said on the city's Facebook page. “We stand together and denounce these vile and cowardly acts. Royal Oak is a welcoming, tolerant and vibrant city. Hate has no home or safe harbor in our community.”

Police say it's not clear if the spray paint vandalism was targeted or not. If you have any helpful information please contact Royal Oak Police at 248-246-3500.
