It's Prince's birthday; how will you celebrate, Detroit?

Like you, we can still hardly believe that we live in a world without the musical genius Prince Rogers Nelson. But it's his birthday, today, as he was born in 1958 in Minneapolis, Minn. on June 7. So naturally, we shall celebrate him all day. In addition to our own private remembrances and celebrations, we know of a handful of area events which pay tribute to the king:

"Gabe Gonzilla & Friends Presents The Prince Purple Party" goes down at the Harbor House in Detroit, which looks to be the top live music event related to this day.

In Windsor, there's a "Prince Celebration Party" at the Gourmet Emporium.

In Jackson, Mich., they're showing Purple Rain at a special event at the Michigan Theatre.

We are most excited ourselves about Sahel Sounds' Tuareg adventure remake of Purple Rain, cheekily called Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in It, at Trinosophes tonight.

The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor is waiting until Saturday to celebrate with a vinyl tribute to the genius from Minneapolis with "Let's Go Crazy - Prince's Birthday Party."

And next week at El Club, you can catch a double tribute event at El Club on Friday, June 16 with the Prince and Michael Experience show.

And looking ahead to August, the DSO is reprising their crowd-pleasing pops-approach to contemporary music with a special tribute to the purple one.
