The other day we were tipped off to a new tasty burger on the Detroit burger landscape: the ridiculously-priced, $55 Foie Burger from the Rugby Grille in the swanky Townsend Hotel in Birmingham. Picture this, it's comprised of waygu beef, sweet onion jam, seared foie gras, braised short rib, parmesan aioli, burgundy truffles, and Thomasville tomme cheese.
That's quite a mouthful, and a hefty price tag, at least for most of us who live south of Eight Mile. Alas, the One Percenters have their burger needs too.
This new addition to metro Detroit's already vast variety of burgers got us thinking, where else can you find a totally mouth-watering, WTF burger experience that perhaps wont cost close to the equivalent of a DTE bill. Here are some of our picks, based not necessarily on whether they're the all-time best around, but more on the creativity involved in topping these patties.
The stuffed burgers from Cutter's Bar & Grill, Eastern Market
Most of us are familiar with the concept of a stuffed burger. It usually involves the addition of various cheeses, sealed inside a patty. Cutter's in Eastern Market takes that concept several steps further with its stuffed burger menu. You'll get 'em stuffed with cheddar and bacon or with a fried egg on top. Another is packed with blue cheese and green olives, a stuffed "patty melt," with swiss, mushrooms and grilled onions inside the patty. Then you have a pizza-inspired one with mozzarella and pepperoni inside, and finally, the pepper jack cheese and pepperonicini-stuffed burger. All priced at $9 or less.
Duck Confit Poutine Burger, Ale Mary's Beer Hall, Royal Oak
You figure this is a beer hall, so what better menu item than a decadent burger? Piled high with duck confit poutine, white cheddar curds, and beer battered fries, at $13 this is quite the combo.
The Southwest Detroit at Mercury Burger & Bar
It's got burger in the restaurant's name, so obviously it's their specialty. Here, you can go with the most basic, The Classic with lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion for $7.50, or go a little nutzo, like with the $10 Southwest Detroit the Southwest, packed with a chorizo slider, jalapenos, munster cheese, tortilla strips, avovcado, and zanahorias (pickled and spicy carrots).
Roast Burger at Roast
Roast is a high-end steakhouse, with normally high-end prices to match, but during weekday happy hours, you can dig in on their simple, yet indulgent Roast Burger, which comes with bacon, cheddar, a fried egg, and pickled onion - all on an English muffin. Used to be these guys sold for a measily $3 between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. They've upped their prices, but you can still snag one for half off the regular $12.
The Big Baby at The Food Exchange
We first heard about this eastside burger joint on Vice Munchies' Huang's World, when celeb chef/restaurateur Eddie Huang took a culinary tour of Detroit. He introduced us to The Big Baby. It's made up of a half-pound patty, corned beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese, ketchup, and mustard... What a monster of a baby, weighing in at $8, $9.50 with cheese, and only $5.50 on Wednesdays.
The Tavern Burger at Republic
The meat-centric menu at Republic doesn't skrimp on its Tavern Burger, whose patty is beef and lamb blend, then topped with bacon jam, egg cream, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. True, it'll run you $18, but you could get two of these and at least a round of brews for the cost of one Foie Burger.
