Free Money for Artists!

With the Big Three tanking and the economy in a shambles, metro Detroit artists find themselves in an increasingly tight spot. If they have day jobs, they’re wary of layoffs; if they make a living selling their work, they’re a little jittery about their patrons’ purse strings in these lean times.

Which is why the artist fellowships offered by the Kresge Foundation have piqued a lot of interest among local artists and performers. As described in an article by MT contributor Kelli Kavanaugh last year, the fellowships “will annually award 18 local artists $25,000 — no strings attached.”

But in order to be considered for one of the 18 fellowships, which are to be administered by the College for Creative Studies, applications must be received by 11:59 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27. You can submit online at kresgeartsindetroit.org, but the earlier the better. Any questions? Kresge Arts in Detroit can be reached at 313-664-7940.
