Retail: Literati bookstore holds down in the wake of Borders closing in Ann Arbor

Following the departure of Borders, and its giant flagship store at the corner of East Liberty and State streets, Literati has played a significant role in keeping downtown Ann Arbor stocked with a general interest, new bookstore since it opened in early 2013. Carrying a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children's books, and more, the three-story Literati has a pleasant vibe that matches the demeanor of its staff. Owners Mike and Hilary Gustafson, also natives of Ann Arbor, spent months researching their hometown and launched an idealistic shop for bookworms across the region. Beyond the store's vast selection, Literati offers the full package now with the recent opening of the Espresso Bar on the second floor. Situated at the corner of South Fourth Street and Washington Avenue, Literati's manager says the shop has seen a steady increase of foot traffic over the past year. "The Ann Arbor community has been so supportive," says manager Jeanne Joesten.
