Fans of Southern barbecue and even Kansas City 'cue will appreciate Texas BBQ : Photographs by Wyatt McSpadden (University of Texas Press, $39.95). No recipes here, but photos that are evocative of legendary, moist, slow-smoked Texas brisket. The foreword, written by Michigan author and food writer Jim Harrison, includes, "When I first looked at Wyatt McSpadden's photos, I fancied that someone had given the soul of Edward Hopper a camera and sent him off to Texas."
BOTTOMS UP
Romorantin is an obscure and ancient grape marked by high acidity and mineral flavors. It's planted mostly in the tiny French appellation of Cour-Cheverny. In very ripe vintages, François Cazin vinifies a portion into a demi-sec and calls it Cuvée Renaissance. The profound tropical fruit and citrus of the fat 2005 vintage is a prime example of why you should occasionally spend $20 for a bottle of wine. Snag one at Elie Wine Co. in Royal Oak.
THE WORKS
