Lighten up — City Council President Pro Tem Ken Cockrel Jr. is hosting a town hall meeting to discuss Detroit’s Public Lighting Department.

“Public lighting is an issue that many citizens are concerned about as is evident from the calls they place to my office,” Cockrel said in a press release announcing the meeting.

Panelists at the event will include Victor Mercado, interim director of the Lighting Department, as well as representatives from the city’s Police Department.

The meeting will be held 6-8:30 p.m., Monday, May 23, at Lipke Recreation Center, 19320 Van Dyke.

Homegrown — EcoVillage, a Detroit group that seeks to “build a conscious community that will take a holistic approach” to development, is hosting a potluck dinner Friday, May 20, at The Crow’s Nest, 2718 Rosa Parks Blvd., Detroit. The community event is 5:30-10 p.m. Even if you show up without a dish in hand, they will welcome you with open arms.
