Not far from this burned-out two-story bungalow at 2153 Chalmers on Detroit’s East Side, new homes have been constructed, and more appear to be on the way. They sit in stark contrast to this sty in the eye, built in 1919 and valued at about $12,000, according to the city’s most recent tax records. Trash, boards and a broken fence add to this sad sight. And the handful of other nearby abandoned homes and buildings in this struggling hood remind one of the ongoing battle Detroit faces in ridding itself of such decay.
