Night and Day

6 THU • MUSIC Peaches Say what you want about her, but Peaches’ pervy punk/electroclash album Fatherfucker is one of the ballsiest pieces of music to come out in a long, long while. Her latest release, “Kick it,” guest starring Iggy Pop, proudly waves flags from feminism to porn and if you don’t like it, tough. Sporting a mug like Sandra Bernhard and the warm fuzziness of Wendy O., Peaches is the best damn live show going. See her at St. Andrew’s Hall (431 E. Congress, Detroit), with Young Heart Attack. Call 313-961-MELT for ticket info.

6 THU • FUN FOR ALL Vegetarian Cooking Class Move over bacon, Michelle Brown of Vegans in Motion is here to offer metro Detroiters a new take on the art of chowin’ down. This event is geared for anyone who is interested in vegetarianism or simply adopting heathier eating habits by cutting back on meat and animal products. Participants will be able to sample the yummy vegan dishes after the demonstration. This free event will be held at the Huntington Woods Library (26415 Scotia Road, Huntington Woods); call 248-543-9720 for pre-registration (recommended); 7-9 p.m.

6 THU • THEATER Everybody’s Talkin’ From the camp of Detroit’s own Mosaic Youth Ensemble and the Mosaic Singers, this snarky adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Much Ado About Nothing has all the trappings of truly great entertainment — gossip, love, slander and innuendo. And believe it or not, it’s wholesome enough for the entire family. See Everybody’s Talkin’ at the General Motors Mosaic Theatre (610 Antoinette St., Detroit); call 313-872-6910 for further information. Runs Thursday-Sunday until May 30.

7 FRI • ISSUES & LEARNING Symposium on Assisting Victims of Torture— Presented by the A.C.C.E.S.S. (Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services), the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Student Center will host its annual symposium on human suffrage. Panel discussions will include presentations from experts in the medical, legal, social and mental health fields, and there will also be testimonies from three survivors of torture. Attendees will also be able to experience an exhibition of artwork from Iraqi refugees and survivors of torture. At the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (2651 Saulino Court, Dearborn); call 313-842-7010 for further information. Symposium runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The $25 fee includes breakfast and lunch.

7 FRI • THEATER Manny and the Mirror: A Rock Opera Making its stage debut in 2002 as a Wayne State University stage project, Manny and the Mirror: A Rock Opera has made a return to the stage. This mystical piece of musical theater about a young man whose future and past experience a seismic clash will be showing at the Hastings Street Ballroom (715 E. Milwaukee, Detroit). Call 313-365-4948 ext. 2 for ticket information. Arrive at 7:15 p.m. to see the brand-new sketch comedy of The Pink Slips. Runs through May 23.

8 SAT • MUSIC Larry Nozero/Peter Soave New Piazzolla Project After infiltrating jazz for years, the Argentine nuevo tango seems near a tipping point. Tango-tinged discs are hitting the racks, and locally there’s the group led by saxophonist Larry Nozero and bandoneon player Peter Soave with pianist Tad Weed, bassist Peter Dominguez and drummer Alex Trajano. A modernistic twist makes room for improvising in this style pioneered by the late Astor Piazzolla. But even if you don’t visualize Rudolph Valentino strutting to this, the stirring sensuality remains unmistakable. At Kerrytown Concert House (415 N. Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor); call 734-769-2999.
