Kay Everett is nothing if not brazen. Despite the public flogging the city councilwoman received over her $10,000, city-funded “Hats on Me in 2003” fashion/campaign calendar, and the FBI investigation into her political finances announced shortly thereafter, Everett requested $3,233 in tax dollars to pay for 1,000 reprints of documents, which include such notices as this one on March 27: “Council Member Everett’s Fundraiser, Detroit Athletic Club, 5-7 p.m.”
Last week, Detroit Budget Director Roger Short sent Everett a letter denying her request. Short is succinct: “The calendar includes fund-raising event(s) — City dollars cannot be used to pay for any expense related to advertising, planning or execution” of campaigning.
Everett wouldn’t expound on the matter. “I am not privy to discuss it with you. Thank you, goodbye,” she said.
Too bad. News Hits, which admires Everett as much for her towering intellect as her fine fashion sense, had hoped she would say her calendar is terribly misunderstood — that it’s not a shameless plug for publicity and possibly a new career as a model for Henry the Hatter, but that voters across town are demanding more, especially of the January shot of Everett smiling sweetly from within the wrap of a big fur coat.
