That's our Bush

News Hits doesn’t usually do book reviews, mostly because, like the current occupant of the Oval Office, we don’t read all that many books. That would cut too much into our precious television-watching time. But we’re making an exception for a wonderful new paperback titled “My First Presidentiary.” One of the things that attracted us was the fact that its written mostly in crayon and purports to be a scrapbook put together by George W. Bush.

Created “with help” from Kevin Guilfoile and John Warner, both of whose work can be found in Dave Eggers’ McSweeney’s magazine, the book is formatted as a series of elementary school assignments (replete with a teacher’s numerous corrections). What makes everything so funny is the absurd premise that our commander-in-chief is a bit of a dim bulb. GWB, dim? Get outta here.

The paperback ($9.95, Modern Humorist) isn’t exactly weighty, but the point is made. For example, there’s this item on a to-do list from the leader of the free world to the director of the Secret Service:

“Change my code name to ‘Shazam’ or ‘Night Rider.’”
