Two for one

Though it might seem like a drop in the bucket to listeners still mourning the demise of classical music radio in Detroit, WDET 101.9 FM begins presenting Detroit Symphony Orchestra performances this Sunday, Oct. 8, 5-7 p.m. Hosted by Dick Cavett, the weekly General Motors Mark of Excellence series will feature a two-hour stereo broadcast by our world-renowned ensemble. On the premiere program, Neeme Järvi conducts Daugherty’s "Route 66," Barber’s Violin Concerto (with Pamela Frank, violin), R. Strauss’ "Sinfonia Domestica" and Gould’s "Variations on Yankee Doodle." Dropped to room for these venerable sounds, however, are past station favorites "Cypress Avenue" (with Bill Shapiro) and "Afropop Worldwide (with Georges Collinet).
