Free Nick Cave downloads, plus album and tour news

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds will perform at the Masonic Temple in Detroit on July 29, 2014. The tour will be in support of the new Live From KCRW album, available from Black Friday, November 29, 2013.

The Metro Times was involved in an online press conference with Cave, and we asked him why he chose to release this show as a live album. “We didn’t intend to make a live album,” he said. “We didn’t go into the KCRW session intending to do anything with that whatsoever. In fact, it was kind of stuck in at the end of a long, grueling America tour. It was the last thing in the world that we wanted to do, to go into a radio station and play some songs on our day off. The nice thing about it was that it was paired down. We could sit down and play the songs. It wasn’t a performance as such. There was an audience but it felt very much like we could lose ourselves in the songs. What came out of it was something beautiful. It was just a really special time. I don’t like a lot of live records – I don’t think you ever experiencing what you do when you see a live show, to feel the power and the energy, and see what’s going on. This particular record really captures the quiet energy of this performance. To me, it was so beautiful that we felt we should put it out.”

Asked about the ever-evolving nature of some of his older songs, Cave said, “Songs are funny things. I believe very much that they have a life of their own, and they have an intelligence about them that goes beyond what the creators gave them. Sometimes, a song can reveal all sorts of things that we had no idea they had the capacity to do so. That can be a very unexpected occurrence. That’s really what characterizes a good song – that it has the capacity. The meaning of the songs is not so important to me. It’s more where the songs actually take me, and to the places that they take me. I can reconvene with the ghosts of my past at some point. That can be quite a beautiful thing. What the songs mean to people is a completely subjective thing. It’s whatever they can get out of it that’s important. Different meanings can break through the words.”
