City Slang: Thee Detroit Halloween Cover Band is back

It’s October, and that means Halloween is fast approaching. That means that all manner of local bands and musicians will go the ‘temporary tribute band’ route, and none will be more highly anticipated than Thee Detroit Halloween Cover Band.

Frank Woodman told us, “The leaves are turnin' and there is a crispness in the air. Fall means Detroit bands are practicing their cover bands for Halloween shows. I'm not going to say we started this thing, but in 2008 when we covered The Sonics for the Zombie Dance Party at the Magic Stick, the concept was pretty new. Detroit bands covering their favorite bands like kids dressing up as their favorite super hero. Thee Detroit Halloween Cover Band is TJ Grech(Pretty Ghouls), John Szymanski(The Hentchmen, SSM), Ray Thompson(The Oscillating Fanclub), Richie Wohlfeil(Danny and the Darleans, Low and Behold) and Frank Woodman(Caveman Woodman, Woodman). Along with The Sonics, we have covered The Cramps in 2009, The Mummies in 2010, The Monks in 2011 and The Troggs last year.”

This year, the band will be Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs. They play the Lager House on Friday, October 18, the Loving Touch on Tuesday, October 22, and the Park Bar on Saturday, October 26.
