Comedian and actor Martin Short is performing at the Andiamo Celebrity Showroom this coming Friday, September 20, and the former Saturday Night Live star says that he’ll be presenting a “party with Marty.” He’ll be dragging out a bunch of his characters, he’ll be singing, dancing, telling stories – he’ll be doing just about everything. Hopefully, he’ll be as funny as he was on Mars Attacks. We grabbed him to find out what we can expect.
So Martin, what have you been up to?
I recently did a part in a Paul Thomas Anderson movie with Joaquin Phoenix [Inherent Vice, also starring Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon and Maya Rudolph]. I’ve been vacationing at my cottage in Italy for a week. I went back to LA last week. Steve Martin and I did some concerts, and then I did the Tonight show.
What are your memories of performing in Detroit in the past?
I haven’t been there frequently. I played the Opera House recently for a benefit. My memories are that my sister went to university in Ann Arbor, so Detroit was something that I would drive through.

I certainly see an overlap.
What can we expect from the show?
The show is like a party with Marty. It’s like if I was hosting Saturday Night Live, and I’m the cast too. I take everyone on a fictitious journey through my career and therefore all of the characters that I’ve ever done. Jiminy Glick [portly character from the show Primetime Glick] will show up and interview a surprise guest. Ed Grimly [SCTV, Saturday Night Live] shows up, Jackie Rogers [SCTV] – it’s very improvised. There are sections where I’ll bring some guys up and turn them into the Three Amigos. I’m singing and dancing - there’s a lot going on.
Like a Sammy Davis Jr. show – you get everything
Well, I don’t think Sammy was coming out in fat suits interviewing people, but there’s a lot going on. Again, I equate it to Saturday Night Live.
