A new Mack Avenue Records album, the Christian McBride Trio’s Out Here, offers a deliciously decadent and refreshingly unusual take on jazz, McBride once again proving himself to be one of the finest masseur of the upright bass currently on the circuit. The two men that complete the trio, pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr., fill in the necessary blanks (but not all of them – some are required), painting an elegant picture that avoids the stagnation that bands of this type can easily suffer and instead bounces along with no small amount of joy. “My trio seems to be an anomaly these days,” says McBride. “I find myself, when listening to young guys on the scene, it’s very musically clever, but I’m not feeling that kind of soul satisfaction that I felt at one time. There was a time when the young guys took pride in paying tribute to the masters but still keeping their own identity and remaining within their own generation.” Well said, sir.
