City Slang: Weekly music review roundup

Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to [email protected].

FUR’s debut full-length, Image on the Reverse has been a long time coming but it was absolutely well-worth the wait. This album is something of a masterpiece, from the opening “Irreversible” with it’s layered vocals and monstrous riffs and huge drumming, through to the very last track. Any notions that FUR is a wimpy band for bedroom Cure fans only is brushed aside here. There are delicate moments, sure, but this album sees FUR wake the fuck up and kick some ass. As we enter December, FUR have just thrown in a good shout for “album of the year.”

The same can not be said for Uncle Kracker, though his Midnight Special (Sugar Hill) album is nothing like as bad as I feared. In fact, there are moments on here when he ceases to sound like the rap-dude-turned-country-dude of old and actually sounds borderline authentic. That’s not a dig, not in the slightest. On “You Got That Thang”, for example, Kracker and his band sound like they genuinely mean what they say. The lyrics, of love and all that jive, are hardly original, but honesty is always ok. Surprisingly impressive work.
