Reunited ‘70s hard rockers Cactus, featuring stellar local guitarist Jimmy McCarty as well as Carmine Appice, plays the Magic Bag in Ferndale on May 5. Support comes from the Muggs.
According to the press release, “Cactus' 1970 self-titled debut -- referred to by McCarty as "the methedrine album" -- turns the blues up to 11 and lets the boogie commence. Recorded at Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady studio with his engineer, Eddie Kramer, Cactus' 1971 follow-up “One Way Or Another” offered a similar mix of R&B covers and originals like "Hometown Bust," a succulent slab of the band's drug 'n' drum-fueled lifestyle. Cactus was also renowned for their amazing live shows. "Each gig was the equivalent of tripping out. I’d say one in five is the magic gig," recalls road manager Richard "Paco" Zimmer.”
”After a long hiatus, Cactus re-emerged in June 2006 with two appearances in New York City: a radio appearance on 92.3 Free FM and their first show since 1972 at B.B. King's Blues Club in Times Square. This show was a warm up for the gig which sparked the reunion, an appearance at the Sweden Rock Festival in Norje, Sweden. The 2006 version of Cactus sees original members Appice and McCarty reunited and joined by former Savoy Brown frontman Jimmy Kunes on vocals. Spurred on by the reunion, Cactus went back in the studio for the first time in over 30 years and recorded the critically acclaimed new (and just released) album “Cactus V”.”
