A new craft cocktail bar and performance venue is preparing to open on Joseph Campau in Hamtramck. Barter is described by owner Cait Pluto as an "approachable" spot that she and two partners built out over the last year in a vacant storefront that last served as a travel agency.

On the cocktail menu are drinks like the J.C. Bramble (Wodka Vodka, blackberry brandy, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup), the Mariposa (Beefeater Gin, Marie Brizard yuzu liqueur, simple syrup, club soda, grapefruit bitters, butterfly pea flower ice cube), and the Panorama (Evan Williams bourbon, vanilla Early Grey syrup, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, salt, egg white, rose bud).

The theater component isn't quite ready but Barter is designing it to be a community resource for local musicians, artists, students and others who are just getting their careers started. Artists will be able to trade services for use of the venue, hence the name Barter.

Pluto said the theater will be open to music, burlesque, traditional theater, improv theater, the visual arts, and just about anything else. The venue is also  hanging a rotating selection of local visual artists' work on its walls.

The 3,500-square-foot space has 20-foot ceilings and a small balcony that will serve as a sound and lighting booth.
