To call the Russian balaclava-wearing female collective Pussy Riot a band would be missing the point — it’s a movement.

Over the years, Pussy Riot has taken on BFF’s Putin and Trump, reproductive rights, the patriarchy, and prison — and they do it all with unwavering fearlessness and sharp humor. Aside from making headlines and being frequently arrested for guerilla-style protests, performances, including that time they ambushed the field during the 2018 FIFA World Cup final dressed as police officers, Pussy Riot leaders Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina are clever and effective songwriters and visual artists. Just listen to “Straight Outta Vagina,” “I Can’t Breathe,” or “Make America Great Again” for proof.

Pussy Riot will perform at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at El Club.; 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-279-7382; elclubdetroit.com; Tickets are $25-$28.
