Friendly atmosphere of an up-north ski lodge. Young and old mix makes up the crowd. Emphasis on pizzas and good Greek salads. Close enough to the Pontiac Silverdome to make it a pre- or postgame stomping ground.
Amici’s Pizza fans in Berkley, Southfield and Birmingham now have their favorite gourmet pizza closer at hand. In addition to takeout and delivery service, the new Amici’s has a small sit-down dining area, freshly painted in warm, fresco-like colors. Free pizza samples are often distributed while you wait for your order. Owner George Stark stresses that Amici’s uses only the freshest ingredients for its long list of specialty pizza toppings, from artichoke hearts to roasted garlic and fontina cheese. Vegan combos and tofu cheese are also on the menu. The tomato sauce is made with fresh herbs, hand-stripped from the stem. Stark says Amici’s goes through four pounds of fresh thyme and 40 pounds of freshly roasted garlic each week. They prepare 15 specialty combinations, including the customer favorite — blackened chicken with scallions, Monterey Jack cheese and tomato-herb sauce — or you can build your own, on traditional or whole wheat crust. All pizzas are topped with Amici’s signature fresh herb sprig. Amici’s also serves salads with homemade dressings, soft breadsticks, specialty sandwiches and lasagna.
Located on Main Street in the heart of downtown Royal Oak, this upbeat and casual restaurant offers classic Andiamo Italian dishes plus a few surprise specialties.
A crowded lunch spot for Troy office workers, this friendly cafe offers good food, reasonable prices, and large portions of both Middle Eastern and American foods. Especially good are the quiche-like artichoke pie, the lemon chicken, and the desserts, which include a fine carrot cake and rice pudding almost as good as the one made by our reviewer's mom. The barbecue ribs tend to be dry, but the vegetarian mousaka and shish kabob are both good and well-seasoned. ***
Bright colors, rich flavors, and exotic aromas. With more than 150 items on its menu, Ashoka wanders from the North to the South, with many legume-based recipes and fiery spice blends. There are even sections of the menu devoted to Indian-Chinese food, a style with a following in India. Also features a full-service bar and catering services.
Create-your-own stir-fry. Choices include a variety of meats, poultry, and seafood; many different vegetables, oils, and sauces; and lots of spices. Watch as the chefs prepare your order.

Bagger Dave’s is more a full-service restaurant than its fast-food competitors, even if the burgers, fries and sandwiches are often delivered to the table wrapped in paper bags. Affordable bottled beer and wine by the pour, sophisticated jazz playlist and woodsy Up-North interior.

The slogan on the wall is your signal that there is something different about Baja Fresh: “No microwave! No can openers! No freezers! No lard! No MSG!” You can eat food that is fast and tasty, and not overwhelmed by a dunk in the deep fryer.
The concept is Belgian brewpub and the atmosphere is totally unpretentious, quirky and interesting. Belgian food is heavily influenced by Germany and France, and some of Bastone’s menu items are quintessential Belgian, such as moule (mussels), brandade de morue (puree of salt cod, potatoes and olive oil, a staple of the poor for centuries) and twice-fried Belgian frites served with mayonnaise.
Falafel-heads come year-round for Beirut Palace's fresh raw juices, daily vegetarian soups and specials, and fresh bread, but the palace packs them in during the warm months with their commodious outdoor seating area for 80, where you can have your gherkins and gawking together while smoking flavored tobacco out of a nargileh.
