  • Aretha's Jazz Cafe

    350 Madison St. Detroit

    (313) 887-8500

If “Musick has Charms to soothe a savage Breast” (William Congreve, 1697), food, too, will smooth savage passions or normal grumpiness brought on by hunger pangs. Sandwiches come with big, perfect steak fries. The Cuban is crunchy and filling, with lots of pickle. Appetizers are another way to go, with my favorite being the skewered coconut shrimp: light, crisp, just a tad sweet. Chicken or beef quesadillas are served with a creditable guacamole as well as salsa and sour cream, and Cuban black bean soup, a mix of whole beans and purée, has a vinegar kick. There’s only one dinner-type entrée per se on the menu — those same three lamb chops, but less interestingly presented, with rice and green beans — and a couple of desserts. To buy tickets to a Jazz Café show, call Music Hall or see Ticketmaster. Food is served from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on weekends.

  • Cafe Felix

204 S. Main St., Ann Arbor Washtenaw County

    (734) 6628650; (734) (FAX)

Ann Arbor’s Café Felix is practically poetic. The tradition of a European café serving pastries, breads and cakes baked fresh on-site, as well as European wines, beers and liquors. They serve a full breakfast, omelets, crepes, soups, salads and tapas. Every finishing touch within the butter-colored walls is indeed, as the French say, “Au point.”
  • Cafe Muse

418 S. Washington Ave., Royal Oak Oakland County

    248-544-4749

You won't find 'omelets' on the menu, as the kitchen has chosen to serve scrambled eggs instead. The "exotic mushroom scramble" is rich with truffle oil and a bit of Boursin cheese, topped with shredded basil, which also goes well with the sweet potato side dish. Another scramble choice incorporates ammoglio, a mortar-and-pestle pounding of garlic, basil, peppercorns and tomatoes. Bread is from Avalon, which means excellent sourdough toast.

  • Mercury Coffee Bar (closed)

    2163 Michigan Ave. Detroit

    (313) 496-4000

Across from Slows Bar BQ and a stone’s throw from what’s left of Michigan Central Station, the Mercury specializes in “slow coffee,” salads and sandwiches. The excellent soups include the Irish colcannon and the thick, velvety, nurturing butternut, and salads are nicely conceived, including a welcome small for $3. The slow coffee is ground and brewed by the cup for peak freshness. Sandwiches and panini on Avalon bread are delicious and creative, although they could use more inside. All the extravagant desserts are made in-house, and there are some doozies. The fact that the kitchen is in your face is part of the Mercury’s design, though it can feel industrial, and loud, despite the assertive friendliness of the staff.

  • Pete's Place

1225 Woodward Heights, Ferndale Oakland County

    (248) 544-4215; (248) 544-4531 (FAX)

Owner-chef Peter Mel has transformed a dreary Coney Island into a hip eatery. The long narrow room is decorated with colorful Broadway show posters on dove-gray walls, and the theatrical motif spills over onto the menu, with “Act I” relating to breakfast, “Act II” to luncheon sandwiches and so on. Somewhere between a trendy bistro and a neighborhood hangout, Pete’s is quite reasonable, with mains averaging around $12 and appetizers and salads around $6. Be certain to ask for the specials of the day, which can include eggplant parmigiana, a near-perfect blend of cheese and tender eggplant slices floating in marinara sauce. As for the dozen permanent entrées, the “lemon chicken piccata” combines an ample portion of chicken in a subtle piquant sauce served over pasta. Four frittata-style omelets anchor the breakfast menu, and luncheon sandwiches range from corned beef on rye to a sautéed chicken breast with spinach, portabella and Gruyere pesto mayo, to paninis stuffed with sautéed vegetables or mushrooms and goat cheese or turkey and spinach, to that venerable classic, French dip consisting of prime-rib shavings, swiss cheese, au jus and horseradish sauce. No smoking.

  • Prickly Pear Cafe

328 S. Main St., Ann Arbor Washtenaw County

    (734) 930-0047

Prickly Pear which has been serving Southwestern grub since 1991. (Southwestern in this case means Tex-Mex plus.) Perpetually crowded, the cafe takes no reservations but will outfit you with a pager so you can stroll along Main Street until your table is ready. Many of the main dishes are familiar Tex-Mex items, such as burritos, fajitas, quesadillas and empanadas, which, as with all the entrées, come on a heaping platter full of tomato rice and baked black and pinto beans and salsa. Vegetarians will again be pleased with the nicely blended spinach and Chihuahua cheese enchilada while the empañada stuffed with chicken is enhanced with a toasted-pumpkin-seed cheese sauce. Nine Mexican beers, along with just as many from other countries, eight tequilas and, of course, regular and “gold” margaritas are what most sots select with their meals. However, the decent wine selections, many of which do not crack the $20 barrier, are another option.
  • QQ Café and Bakery

30941 Dequindre Rd., Madison Heights Detroit

    (248) 588-9899

  • Shatila Bakery & Café

14300 W. Warren Ave., Dearborn Detroit

    (313) 5821952; (313) (FAX)

Don’t be confused by the fruit names — these are not sherbets. They combine fruit purees with butterfat to produce that rich taste and velvety texture that only cream can bestow. Nonfruit ice creams are equally inspired. The array of Mediterranean and European pastries is vast and changes daily. Shatila has a few nonsweet offerings, and they are quite tasty, not also-rans at all: sausage rolls, a tangy and flaky spinach pie and tiny star-shaped cheese pastries. Shatila’s high-ceilinged space is filled with customers sipping coffee or raw fruit juices, busting their diets, and enjoying the air-conditioning.

  • Weekday Café

16749 E. Nine Mile Rd., Eastpointe Detroit

    (586) 778-6433

A cute spot with seating for just 16, the walls are mustard-colored, and black-and-white checkered cloth covers the tables. Sandwiches are what most people order, such as sliced turkey served on cranberry bread with a luscious cranberry mayonnaise in a deep shade of red, flavored with orange zest. Or a ham sandwich on zucchini bread with pineapple cream cheese. Every day features four homemade soups, and desserts are baked daily. Busiest at lunchtime; open weekdays only; closes at 7 p.m.
