  • Angelina Italian Bistro

1565 Broadway, at Grand Circus Park Detroit

    (313) 962-1355; (313) (FAX)

Both co-owners had Sicilian grandmothers, and both toiled in other people’s restaurants — for a total of 50 years — before making their dream come true. The experience shows, with Italian food (and some extras) at “prices that reflect the new reality” -- at least when it comes to the entrées and the wines. There are only three pasta dishes (four if you count the potato-and-flour gnocchi) and three pizzas. The sophisticated Italian menu is supplemented by some fabulous cured and smoked fish and meats as antipasti and by a few dishes that would be comfortable on any menu, such as New York strip, salmon and a pork chop. Also consider the fitting accompaniments: a pile of flaked Parmigiano-Reggiano with a bit of balsamic; a mound of watercress with a superior lemony dressing; a little metal cup of assorted olives; a puddle of grainy mustard. It’s all good. See the menu and the drinks list at angelinadetroit.com.

  • Assaggi Mediterranean Bistro

330 W. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale Oakland County

    (248) 584-3499; (248) 584-2143 (FAX)

Known for its attractive atmosphere and creative menu, Assaggi's menu skips along the northern coast of the Mediterranean from Spain to Lebanon. There's seating for 80 in the al fresco patio, where a garden of tomatoes, peppers, basil, flowers and other herbs — and statuary including reproductions of the "Venus de Milo" and Michelangelo's "David" — conjure the atmosphere of Tuscany. And, happily, the sound of the fountain drowns out the traffic on Nine Mile Road.
  • Bath City Bistro

75 Macomb Place, Mount Clemens Macomb County

    (586) 469-0917; (586) 469-0872 (FAX)

A recently completed renovation has brought the Bath City Bistro back to its original turn-of-the-century glory. The walls are decorated with historical photographs of Mt. Clemens from its heyday as "Bath City, USA" The Bistro's main attraction is its three lanes of trough bowling, a traditional Belgian sport that could be described as a cross between boccie ball and shuffleboard. You can enjoy your favorite beverage while trough bowling with new friends, or sit back and watch others play from the main dining room. The Bistro is open for lunch and dinner, with a menu that includes a wide variety of appetizers, steaks, calzones and seafood (the mussels are a Belgian favorite).
  • Big Beaver Tavern

645 E. Big Beaver Rd., Troy Oakland County

    (248) 680-0066

Once part of the triumvirate of the area’s classic, old-line Italian-American restaurants (Mario’s, Lelli’s, Larco’s), with roots going back a half century to Detroit’s Six Mile Road, Larco's has now become Big Beaver Tavern, with the management going for a sports tavern format, with burgers, fries, wide-screen televisions and poker and blackjack tables in the basement. The customers seem to enjoy the video games, bartop games and DJs, and the food quality remains high. They're selling 1,000 burgers a week, but they still serve the same 8-ounce filet mignon that they served as Larco's since 1990.

  • Buca di Beppo

    12575 Hall Rd., Utica Detroit

    (586) 803-9473

Thousands of people love this place, a fast-growing chain that attempts to re-create the Southern Italian immigrant experience of the 1950s. The surprising thing is that the food is really good — not to mention cheap. The tiramisu is dense and superior, and the wine list has Chianti in a basket.

  • Bucci Ristorante

20217 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Detroit

    (313) 882-1044

As Maxine’s the modest surroundings were trumped by the terrific food. It was the kind of restaurant you weren’t sure you wanted to talk about — maybe you wouldn’t be able to get a table on a weekend evening. The remodeled restaurant is more elegant, spacious, comfortable and relaxing, but the most coveted seats are still the stools that pull up to the marble counter surrounding the open kitchen where diners can watch the theater that is cooking as an art.
  • Cafe Nini Da Edoardo

98 Kercheval, Grosse Pointe Farms Detroit

    (313) 308-3120

With fresh ingredients and plenty of imports from the old country, the Barbieri family is attempting to re-create an Italian café in Grosse Pointe with Café Nini, the latest restaurant to bear the name Da Edoardo. They have Mokarabia coffee, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto di Parma and mortadella with pistachios — all that’s lacking is a glass of wine to sip with the panini. The menu is soups, salads and sandwiches, plus an easy-to-fathom, affordable list of coffees.

Serving pizza, panini, gelato, smoothies and espresso. "Authentic decor with fresh food fast. Where locals eat."
  • Cariera's

6565 Telegraph Rd., Dearborn Heights Detroit

    (313) 278-4060; (313) 278-4117 (FAX)

Charming little Italian restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine. Portions are big enough for two. In two cozy rooms, with bare wooden tables and thick cloth napkins and walls full of family photographs and wine and oil bottles, Cariera’s turns out a familiar array of old-fashioned classics. As befits a restaurant with few pretensions, most patrons do not dress up for a night out at Cariera’s, even from Wednesday through Saturday when they feature mellow live music. The serviceable list of 20 California and Italian wines, split evenly between red and white, is fairly marked up, with most less than $30. And the house wine, at $22.95 a liter for a decent pinot grigio or chianti of Italian origin, is another option. As for brandy, it is difficult to resist ordering an earthy grappa along with dessert (or maybe for dessert), considering the price — $3.50.
