    As at the majority of Thai restaurants in the area, the food at Bangkok Crossing is heavier than you might prefer. That said, several of the dishes are enjoyable: pla dook pad ped (crisp red snapper stir-fried with mushrooms, peppers and eggplant), pad ma kher (eggplant that’s fried within an inch of its life), as well as a few concessions to the American palate.

    Montree and Somnuk Arpachinda were pioneers in bringing Thai fare to the area, and they carry on at the colorful hideaway they opened in 1983. Beef, pork, chicken, vegetable and seafood entrees come in styles ranging from simple sautes with bamboo shoots, mushrooms and green onions to hotter-than-Szechuan treatments like Thai curry, lime juice, lemongrass and hot peppers. Not a lot of Thai restaurants offer beer and wine. This one does. ****

    Bangkok Sala Café serves both spicy and mild Thai cuisine. The menu features more than 50 different dishes, prepared by Thailand-born chef Lue Yang. Owner Bee Yang recommends pad Thai (noodles with bean sprouts, egg, green onion, lemon and peanuts), gang gai (rice with various vegetables, Thai hot curry and coconut milk), and pad pak (rice with brown sauce and vegetables). Customers can also choose dishes that include chicken, beef pork, shrimp, scallops or squid. There’s even tofu. Lunch items are served with soup, dinner items are served with cookies. Free shrimp chips are also served when you dine in.

Owner and chef Wonpen Phelps lived in Thailand in her early years and has more than 30 years of cooking experience. She promises to serve only fresh Thai food in her 24-seat, small but friendly restaurant. Her popular signature dishes include cashew chicken, Thai fried rice and spicy noodles. A few special traditional dishes are served every Sunday, which is Penn’s "authentic Thai day." Catering and carryout are available upon request.

The level of heat you ask for is not just a personal preference but an index of your toughness, nay, of your authenticity. Pi’s heat levels should be approached with caution. The prices are friendly, with $1.69 spring rolls that are superior. The pad kee mao (“spicy noodle”) has wide, slippery noodles heaped with generous amounts of smoky chicken and crisp vegetables. The gang gai (red curry chicken) has fiery red chili paste that's only slightly alleviated by the sweet blandness of the coconut milk. Limited seating. No credit cards, no booze. Call ahead 15 or 20 minutes to place your order. Open 11 a.m.-8:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon-8:45 p.m. Saturday.

    Friendly but unassuming environment, great food, low prices and immense portions. Service is not top-notch, but it's the food you're coming for. Although quality varies from dish to dish, soups such as Tom Kha and Tom Yum are delicious, and more excellent soups are hidden in the “Noodles” section of the menu. It's closed on Sundays and does not serve alcohol, but come for lunch and you'll find that entrées are a buck cheaper.

    Even if you dislike the alliteration in the name, you’ve got to love the food. Opened on the site of the late Thai House Express. Tong Thai'd serves authentic, fine Thai cuisine: spring rolls so good, they often sell out after lunch, Thai flavored beef jerky with sticky rice and a variety of fried rice, noodles, curry and seafood dishes. Reasonable prices but narrow dinning area. Closed Sundays.
