The sunflower yellow and purple color scheme and huge tilted mirrors that allow patrons to glimpse those sitting behind them have given the space a slickly contemporary look. • Luigi's

36691 Jefferson Ave., Harrison Township Detroit

    (586) 468-7711

The somewhat kitschy setting of checkered tablecloth, faux grapevines and strings of small red and green lights don’t prepare you for the quality of service. Whether you’re dining in the dark and boisterous front room or the more sedate and well-lit back, you’re sure to be impressed by the efficiency of the waitstaff. Children are welcomed with crayon-based activities and ample menu options. You’ll want to try one of the appetizers like rice-mozzarella-and-sausage balls baked in a breadcrumb crust and covered with tomato basil sauce (arancini). Of course, Luigi’s offers typical Italian fare as well: various pasta dishes, ravioli, veal or chicken done in your choice of Parmesan, marsala or picatta. The menu veers further American with steaks, chops and the ubiquitous slab of baby back ribs. For seafood options, you have whitefish, steamed mussels, Cajun crawfish, or fish and chips. Then you have Luigi’s exceptional pizzas. Complement your meal with a bottle from the adequate wine list or the decent range of beers. With both food and drinks, Luigi’s just about covers everyone’s taste sensibilities. Opens at 4 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, opens at 3 p.m. Sundays.

  • Portofino

    3455 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte Detroit

    (734) 281-6700

The main reason to visit Portofino is the water, which looks inviting as you gaze at the wooded tip of Grosse Ile, watching the boats slip by. In fine weather, some of them even tie up at Portofino’s dock, which makes sense, considering that the real Portofino is an Italian resort town on the Mediterranean. Dinner starts with hot bread and a generous dish of olive oil loaded with Parmesan and cracked pepper. Appetizers are mostly from the sea, side salads are nicely composed, and the mix of mains is ambitious enough to range from ribs and lamb chops to po’ boy sandwiches to Italian or seafood mainstays. The pasta choices are consistently excellent.

For a mini-state with fewer than 30,000 inhabitants, San Marino has made a lot of history. The fresh, homemade pastas and the large number of vegetarian selections should impress even the most discerning diner. The atmosphere of Vivo! is inviting and intimate, with warmly painted walls and live piano music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Reservations are recommended. Pastas $9-$18 (Canadian); entrees $14-$25.
