The sunflower yellow and purple color scheme and huge tilted mirrors that allow patrons to glimpse those sitting behind them have given the space a slickly contemporary look. The food is in contrast: It’s the solid Italian fare of old master Aldo Ottaviani interpreted by a crew of young chefs in the open kitchen.

  • Angelina Italian Bistro

1565 Broadway, at Grand Circus Park Detroit

    (313) 962-1355; (313) (FAX)

Both co-owners had Sicilian grandmothers, and both toiled in other people’s restaurants — for a total of 50 years — before making their dream come true. The experience shows, with Italian food (and some extras) at “prices that reflect the new reality” -- at least when it comes to the entrées and the wines. There are only three pasta dishes (four if you count the potato-and-flour gnocchi) and three pizzas. The sophisticated Italian menu is supplemented by some fabulous cured and smoked fish and meats as antipasti and by a few dishes that would be comfortable on any menu, such as New York strip, salmon and a pork chop. Also consider the fitting accompaniments: a pile of flaked Parmigiano-Reggiano with a bit of balsamic; a mound of watercress with a superior lemony dressing; a little metal cup of assorted olives; a puddle of grainy mustard. It’s all good. See the menu and the drinks list at angelinadetroit.com.

There's seating for 80 in the al fresco patio, where a garden of tomatoes, peppers, basil, flowers and other herbs — and statuary including reproductions of the "Venus de Milo" and Michelangelo's "David" — conjure the atmosphere of Tuscany. A recently completed renovation has brought the Bath City Bistro back to its original turn-of-the-century glory. The walls are decorated with historical photographs of Mt. Clemens from its heyday as "Bath City, USA" The Bistro's main attraction is its three lanes of trough bowling, a traditional Belgian sport that could be described as a cross between boccie ball and shuffleboard. The Bistro is open for lunch and dinner, with a menu that includes a wide variety of appetizers, steaks, calzones and seafood (the mussels are a Belgian favorite).

    (248) 680-0066

Once part of the triumvirate of the area’s classic, old-line Italian-American restaurants (Mario’s, Lelli’s, Larco’s), with roots going back a half century to Detroit’s Six Mile Road, Larco's has now become Big Beaver Tavern, with the management going for a sports tavern format, with burgers, fries, wide-screen televisions and poker and blackjack tables in the basement. The customers seem to enjoy the video games, bartop games and DJs, and the food quality remains high. They're selling 1,000 burgers a week, but they still serve the same 8-ounce filet mignon that they served as Larco's since 1990.
